Autumn Term
In the Autumn Term Year 1 will complete a range of activities based around London. The children will learn about The Great Fire of London, The Gunpowder plot and The Plague. We will look at maps of Great Britain and discover facts about the different countries in the United Kingdom. This work will be completed through pictures, searching the internet, exploring maps, watching videos and finding a range of information in picture books. We will then use our knowledge to create artwork in the style of Andy Warhol using shapes to create London landmarks and build our own bridges during Design and Technology. Embedded within all of this will be the development of phonic knowledge, writing skills, numeracy skills and spellings.
Spring Term
In the Spring Term Year 1 are going to explore the topic of 'Farming and our local area'. We are going to complete a range of work based on stories such as 'Superworm' and 'Farmer Duck'. Our cross curricular work will include comparing the urban area of West Bromwich to rural areas, investigating how West Bromwich has changed over time, identifying the key features of farming and exploring the continents and oceans of the world. A selection of Art activities will be completed including using vegetables to create prints.
Summer Term
The theme for the Summer Term is ‘At the seaside’. Work to be completed includes looking at the seaside experience now and in the past. How our seaside resorts have changed will include looking at different types of entertainment, for example, building sandcastles on the beach and enjoying a Punch and Judy show. Activities on important historical people such as Grace Darling and the establishment and work of the Royal National Life Boat Institution will be undertaken. Our art and design work will include making moving pictures and creating clay 'sand sculptures'. Science work will be based how things move, including experiments using the pull and push movements.
