Spellings: Our spelling test is every Friday and spellings for the next week will be given out on the same day.
Reading books: Please bring your reading books and share books in by Thursday so we can change them ready to give out new ones on Friday!
Homework: Homework will be given out half termly and will need to be handed in on the last Monday of each half term.
In the Autumn Term Year 1 will complete a range of activities based around London. The children will learn about The Great Fire of London, The Gunpowder plot and The Plague. We will look at maps of Great Britain and discover facts about the different countries in the United Kingdom. This work will be completed through pictures, searching the internet, exploring maps, watching videos and finding a range of information in picture books. We will then use our knowledge to create artwork in the style of Andy Warhol using shapes to create London landmarks and build our own bridges during Design and Technology. Embedded within all of this will be the development of phonic knowledge, writing skills, numeracy skills and spellings.
In the Spring Term Year 1 are going to explore the topic of 'Farming and our local area'. We are going to complete a range of work based on stories such as 'Superworm' and 'Farmer Duck'. Our cross curricular work will include comparing the urban area of West Bromwich to rural areas, investigating how West Bromwich has changed over time, identifying the key features of farming and exploring the continents and oceans of the world. A selection of Art activities will be completed including using vegetables to create prints.
The theme for the Summer Term is ‘At the seaside’. Work to be completed includes looking at the seaside experience now and in the past. How our seaside resorts have changed will include looking at different types of entertainment, for example, building sandcastles on the beach and enjoying a Punch and Judy show. Activities on important historical people such as Grace Darling and the establishment and work of the Royal National Life Boat Institution will be undertaken. Our art and design work will include making moving pictures and creating clay 'sand sculptures'. Science work will be based how things move, including experiments using the pull and push movements.
This week in Art we practised using tools to create clay models.
This week we were lucky enough to have a medical student in our class. We learnt all about the NHS and First Aid and created posters to show what we had learnt.
This week in Computing we were human Beebots and had to direct our friends.
This week we explored the different senses during Science. We found the lemon VERY sour!
This week in DT we started to look at puppets. We looked at characters from the story 'Little Red Riding Hood' and then designed our own puppets for the different characters.
This week in Science we looked at the human body through different activities.
This week we used different types of fruit to make printing patterns.

Last week we had a Science workshop about different animals.
This week we had a Maths Problem Solving day!
This week in RE we talked about the things and people we are thankful for. We then made paper chains to show our appreciation.
This week in DT we enjoyed making bridges out of different materials. We tested them with a toy car to see if they worked.
This week in RE we discussed the meaning of advent and why it is important to Christians. We then created our own advent calendars.
This week in Science we learnt about the different seasons. We talked about how the weather changes across the seasons and their key features.
This week we have been exploring different materials to see which will be best to make our bridge in DT.
This week we tested different materials to see which was the most waterproof for an umbrella. We wanted to make sure our monkey Bongo didn't get wet!
